Diving in Yap

One of the main attractions for divers in Yap is the chance to see manta rays year-round. The island is home to a resident population which can be observed at various cleaning stations around the island.  Beyond manta rays, Yap's waters host a rich variety of marine life. The island's relatively remote location and commitment to conservation have helped preserve its marine ecosystems, offering unspoiled underwater landscapes.

When exploring Yap's waters expect a diverse and vibrant array of marine life. Various shark species, including reef sharks, blacktip sharks, and occasionally hammerhead sharks, patrol the waters. The coral reefs teem with colourful fish such as butterflyfish, angelfish, parrotfish, wrasses, and triggerfish, while deeper waters host pelagic species like tuna, barracuda, and jacks. Sea turtles, both green and hawksbill, are common sightings, as are a variety of nudibranchs, octopus, and cuttlefish. You might also spot moray and garden eels, eagle rays, and stingrays. The coral gardens, comprising both hard and soft corals, provide a stunning backdrop and habitat for much of this marine life. For those interested in macro photography, numerous species of shrimp, gobies, and blennies can be found. While rare, the lucky diver might even catch a glimpse of dugongs or dolphins.

The best time to visit Yap is generally considered to be between December and April. This period coincides with the dry season, which offers the most favourable weather conditions. During these months, you can expect clearer skies, calmer seas, and better visibility underwater. The water temperature remains relatively constant year-round, typically ranging from 27°C to 29°C (81°F to 84°F), making for comfortable diving conditions.

Sea conditions are favorable for diving throughout the year. The waters are typically calm, especially within the protective lagoon areas. Visibility is often excellent, ranging from 30 to 40 meters (100 to 130 feet) on average, and sometimes extending up to 60 meters (200 feet) or more. This exceptional clarity is due to the island's location away from major landmasses and the lack of river runoff.
