Encounter the Majestic Mola Mola in Bali

The waters around Bali are teeming with diverse marine life, but few creatures are as awe-inspiring as the massive Mola Mola, also known as the ocean sunfish. This unusual and fascinating fish is a true gentle giant of the sea, and spotting one while scuba diving in Bali is an experience you'll never forget.

Interesting Facts About the Mola Mola

  • Despite their immense size (some can weigh over 2,000 pounds), Mola Molas are docile and harmless to humans. They are often seen basking in the sun near the surface, which gives them their "sunfish" nickname.

  • These unique fish have a lateral body shape, resembling a disc with two long fins on either side. This distinct appearance has earned them nicknames like "swimming head" and "topside tumour."

  • Mola Molas are found in temperate and tropical waters around the world, but the waters of Indonesia, including Bali, are one of the best places to spot them.

  • They are believed to be the heaviest bony fish in the world and can grow up to 4.3 meters (14 feet) in length.

  • These massive fish consume primarily jellyfish, which they swallow whole with their small mouths.
